Below are presented examples of differentiated instruction adhering to Common Core Standard "CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2".

Objective:

Write a well-researched persuasive essay explaining why you think that the themes and messages presented in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet either do or do not hold true in today’s society and why teenagers either can or cannot learn from their mistakes.

Topic:

Directions:
1.       Create rough essay outline using readwritethink.org (listed below)
2.      Research relevant material –use facts that would be convincing to a teenager
3.      Remember to balance logos, ethos, and pathos
4.      Type essay
5.      Submit to “peer review” discussion board via class wiki
6.      Edit according to peer review comments
7.      Type final essay – use Purdue OWL (listed below) to check format
8.      Submit final essay to Mrs. Miller by March 30, 2015 via class wiki “Published Student Work” page.

Essay will be graded by according to rubric passed out in class. 30% of grade will be reliant on appropriate format, citations, grammar, sentence structure, and spelling.
Essay worth 150 pts.

Objective:
-          Determine how time period affects script, costume, actor posture, tone
-          Change script, costume, setting, posture, tone without impacting message or order of events
-          Identify themes of work, decide if themes and messages still hold true in varying social situations and time eras
-          Interpret Shakespeare in complete detail
Student Role:
Actor (as necessary), translator, editor, script writer
Audience:      
Classmates, teachers, denizens of the internet. 
Format:         
Recorded performance uploaded to YouTube/class wiki, translated script emailed to Mrs. Miller
Topic:
Would the message and themes of Romeo and Juliet still hold true if the story had been written during a different time and social setting?

Directions:
1.      Students will be split into groups assigned by Mrs. Miller
2.      Students will read through scene assigned by Mrs. Miller
3.      Select appropriate time period and setting to set scene in (1960’s war protest, meeting of the founding fathers, moon landing, 1920’s jazz party)
4.      Students must interpret scene and re-write scene with appropriate phrasing – write the scene how it would have been written if it was set in your setting
5.      Students compile costume and filming location as well as camera to record
6.      Students act out and record their scene translation.
7.      Use free online video editor (listed below) to edit video
8.      Email translated script to Mrs. Miller by March 30
9.      Upload final video to Mrs. Miller’s YouTube Channel and class wiki under “Student Collaborative Work”

Students need to complete and upload their video by March 30, 2015.
Please e-mail typed copy of translated script to Mrs. Miller by March 30, 2015.
Videos will be uploaded to class wiki and to Mrs. Miller’s YouTube channel.
Project is worth 200 pts. 30% of that grade will be for historical accuracy (costumes, setting, phrasing), 60% for accurately interpreting and rephrasing the script. 10% for professionalism.

Objective:
-          Identify theme and concepts portrayed in Romeo and Juliet
-          Create convincing advertisement of written work using only images
Student Role:

Everyone        
Format:         
Picture collage (advertising poster) (originally placed on class wiki and school website and potentially printed as hard copy and used as real advertisement)
Topic:
How would you convince people to come see your performance of Romeo & Juliet using only the themes of the play in images?
Directions:
1.      Students will identify underlying themes and messages conveyed in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
2.      Students will then use online databases of free-use and copyright free images (listed below) to compose and aesthetically pleasing picture collage of images that convey the themes and messages
3.      Using a free online photo editor (listed below), students will design an advertising poster for Romeo and Juliet.
4.      Students will post finished result to class wiki by March 30.
5.      Students will e-mail finished product to Mr. Miller by March 30.

Assessment:
Students will determine the underlying theme and messaged of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Students will then use copyright free and free use images from online databases to compile a picture collage.
Students will use a photo editor to turn their collage into a poster advertising Romeo and Juliet.
Finished product should be posted to class wiki and e-mailed to Mrs. Miller by March 30th.
Assignment is worth 100 pts. 40% of grade is for correctly identifying the themes of the piece. 30% of the grade is for choosing images appropriate for conveying the theme. 30% is for creating an advertisement that is aesthetically pleasing and convincing.
As an added bonus, the poster voted most efficient and pleasing will be printed and used to advertise the school’s upcoming performance of Romeo and Juliet in the fall and will be placed all over the school and surrounding community gathering places.
